The first tip is that you should change up your diet from what it was before. If you’ve been eating a relatively low number of calories on a daily basis in order to lose weight, this may have caused your body to down regulate and plateau. So, for example, if you’ve been eating 1,200 calories per day, you should bump it up to 1,500 calories per day for a few weeks, while maintaining your exercise habits. In many cases, you will start to lose weight once again. If this happens, then it simply means that your body wasn’t getting enough calories to function. It is important that you don’t over diet and eat too few calories than your body needs.

Another tip is to change up your exercise routine. If you only do a particular exercise all of the time or have a set gym routine that you’ve been doing for many weeks or months, then this may have caused your weight loss to plateau. Fortunately, the fix is very simple and all you need to do is change up your regular routine. For example, if you mainly do steady state cardio such as walking, jogging, using the elliptical etc, then you should change your routine to more intense training such as HIIT. High intensity interval training is a fantastic way to break out of any plateau since it will increase your metabolism and jump start your weight loss once again. Of course, you don’t necessarily need to do HIIT, you can do cardio kickboxing, weight training, a specific sport etc. The point is to change the current type of training that you’re doing so that it elicits a response from your body.

Lastly, in some cases, if you’ve been in a plateau for a few days or a couple of weeks, the best thing is to wait it out. Occasionally your weight loss may seem to have plateaued but that is not the case. If you continue dieting and exercising, you will start to lose weight once again after a period of time.
